El Pibe de Oro - Diego Maradona

“The Golden Boy” as he is affectionately known by his fans, Diego Maradona has been regarded as the Greatest Footballer of all-time by many, rivaled only by Pele in this regard.

Maradona is most famous for his exploits with Argentina, whom he helped to the World Cup in 1986 and then again the final in 1990, narrowly missing out on consecutive cups.

His vision, quickness, agility, dribbling skills. Passing and shooting are come of his stand out attributes that make him one of the best ever. Maradona was also a deadly free kick taker as well as a great leader. His charisma and personality inspired many of his teams to punch above their weight. His ability with the ball at his feet was second to none, with the ball almost seemingly glued to his feet and impossible to dispossess without fouling.

He was predominantly left footed and had tremendous technical ability and speed. He could squeeze through tight spaces and dribble or pass depending on the situation. His low center of gravity and compact physique and strength combined for dangerously good dribbling abilities.

His “Hand Of God” goal and then the goal of the century in the quarters against England have made him famous beyond measure. He single handedly won the World Cup for Argentina that year, a feat that is very hard to replicate. He won the Golden Ball too for the best player.

Although Maradona could not always replicate his form for club, both Barcelona and Napoli enjoyed lots of success with Maradona in their team. He was twice the most expensive signing in the world, and at Napoli he took a club from mid table mediocrity to the top of the league.

His career was marred by doping allegations which threatened to harm his legacy, however his fans stuck by him through this tough time and Maradona now stands as one of the most cult figures in his country.

He briefly had a managerial stint with the Argentina National Tea but it ended in defeat in the Quarters to Germany in 2010.

For all his flaws and failures, Maradona will forever be regarded as the Greatest Player out of Argentina and one of the true greats of the game.
