Raul Gonzalez started his career with the Atletico Madrid youth academy before it was dissolved in 1996. This resulted in his transfer to neighbours and Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. It was here that Raul would spend the majority of his playing career and become one of Spain's all time greats.
For fans of Real Madrid he was nothing short of a legend and ended his career as their all time top scorer, as well as for his National team.
Raul won everything at club level, winning the La Liga , Copa Del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Champions league as well as the UEFA super cup. He would go on to become the all time top scorer in the champions league as well with 72.
He held the record for appearances for both his club and country. Sadly, as his career was fading the Spanish side enjoyed it's best run, winning the world cup and the euro championship, from which Raul was left out. He was one of the most talented players ever not to win any major silverware at international level.
His playing style can be described as that of typical centre forward. Although he wasn't very well built or tall, neither did he possess electric pace, what Raul did have was an uncanny eye for goal. Raul was left footed and was one of the best finishers in the game in his prime. He was also a good header of the ball and provided physical presence despite his slender frame. His major attribute was his ability to accelerate at the right moment and fox his opponents. He possessed the skill and know how to outwit defenders and return with a bag full of goals every time.
Raul preferred the center forward position but he could also play off the striker, his tremendous reading of the game and vision often helping him get assists.
He was the captain for Real Madrid for a long time as well as for Spain. One of the most influential people of his era, he held a strong hold over both club and country, always playing in the starting XI no matter the circumstances. He had a great relationship with his fans and was adored the world over. This helped him attain the position of power within his teams.
He was also part of the galacticos era which included players like Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham playing for Los blancos.
He would eventually bid goodbye to Madrid in a tearful farewell after the second galacticos era started, going to Germany to play for Schalke 04. He would help Schalke progress to the UEFA champions league and the German cup titles. He currently plays in the UAE, where he is inspiring others and helping to spread awareness about football.
He was truly a legend of the game and one whose presence will always be felt for those associated with Real Madrid.
Gracias amigos.
